Finding Your Roots Through Records consists of four sessions focused on the various public records individuals can research to find more information about their ancestors. Each two-hour session is interactive and includes a combination of lectures, small group work, question and answer time, and homework to prepare for the next session.

This workshop series is perfect for anyone looking to take a deeper dive into researching public records, specifically newspapers, federal and state land records, wills and probate records, and military records. Your family does not need Maryland ties to benefit from this course; however, the instructor will use some Maryland examples.

DNA has provided a broad range of applications to benefit science, ranging from ancient DNA, family history research, and medical screening. The use in forensic cases has progressed from methodologies for locating birth parents for adoptees, to providing identification of human remains, and solving criminal cold cases. Maryland was the first state to implement a law governing the use of Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG). The use by law enforcement is still largely misunderstood. This class will explain the role of DNA as used in solving criminal cases and providing identity to human remains. Instructor: Andrew Hochreiter.

Maryland Public Television is partnering with the Maryland Genealogical Society to offer a beginner-to-intermediate Genetic Genealogy workshop series this summer. The three bi-weekly sessions will introduce genetic genealogy and DNA testing, explain what your DNA test results mean, and help you start to make sense of all the new cousins on your DNA match list. You will learn the value of DNA testing and analysis and how it can be an integral part of your genealogical research. 
Those who attend will receive: a coupon toward a MyHeritage DNA test kit or MyHeritage "Complete Plan", a one-year MPT Passport membership or membership extension, and a one-year membership to the Maryland Genealogical Society (MGS) -- not applicable to current MGS members.

Are you wondering where to start with your boxes and filing cabinets? What's worth saving? Are your pictures and documents appropriately stored for future generations? What kind of library or repository would be interested in your research files? What steps can you take now to make sure your hard work isn't lost? 
Mary Mannix will bring her archival perspective to bear on our collection management issues. She is the Maryland Room Manager of the C. Burr Artz Public Library of the Frederick County Public Libraries, a position she has held since 1998. For eleven years, she was the Library Director of the Howard County Historical Society. She received an MLS from the University of Maryland, College Park, and an MA in American History from the University of Delaware with a certificate in Museum Studies. She teaches genealogy librarianship at the University of Maryland and and public history courses at Hood College.
Cost $35 for MGS members; $40 for non-members.
